Stardock SystemsStardock Systems is a midwestern software development company that specializes in both custom and commercial software. In 1993, Stardock began its move into the OS/2 software market by developing Galactic Civilizations. Within 6 months after its release, Galactic Civilizations was the top selling OS/2 retail product. There are a number of possible reasons for GalCiv's success. Stardock tapped into pent up gaming demand in the OS/2 community. The GalCiv beta program was very open and produced software that the users wanted. GalCiv exploited OS/2's abilities in a unique way. With GalCiv's success behind them, Stardock began to leverage its position to move into the applications business. Its first step was to bring out OS/2 Essentials, a mini-application suite for OS/2 that has been hailed as the first truly mass market application for OS/2. Its aggressive pricing strikes a major contrast to the historically high prices OS/2 software has been found at. Stardock has also released Shipyards, an add on to GalCiv that allows users to design their very own types of star ships. Like OS/2 Essentials, the $20 price tag of Shipyards makes it an attractive purchase. As OS/2 gained momentum as a desktop operating system, Stardock announced its fall OS/2 product campaign in an effort to bring OS/2 the native applications it feels OS/2 is lacking. There is a press release containing more detailed information on Stardock's Fall OS/2 Campaign. OS/2 has achieved critical mass. It is time for quality native OS/2 software to become available. |
